Amblyopia: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatment Options
Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is a vision development disorder that typically begins in early childhood. It occurs when one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription glasses or contact lenses. If left untreated, amblyopia can lead to permanent vision impairment, making early detection and treatment essential.
What Causes Amblyopia?
Amblyopia develops when the brain and one eye are not working together properly. Instead of processing images from both eyes equally, the brain favors one eye and ignores the other. This imbalance weakens the visual ability of the affected eye over time. Several conditions can trigger amblyopia, including:
Strabismus (eye misalignment): When the eyes do not align properly, the brain suppresses input from the misaligned eye to avoid double vision.
